Measurement Term 2

My goal for measurement this term is find the perimeter/area of shapes.

                                                             24m
                                                             ☐ 13m

The way to work out the perimeter of this rectangle, is adding together all of the numbers. On the exact opposite side of the shape, it is symmetrical so on the opposite side, it is the same number. So times 24 by 2. (24x2=48) On the opposite side of the 13, it is the same too. So times the 13 by two too. (13x2=26) now add the numbers together, (26+48=74) so the perimeter of this shape is 74m.

To get the area of the shape, I times the number by the number. (So 24x13=) But that question is too hard to figure out on its own. So I am going to use the doubling and halving strategy. I will double the 13, and halve, the 24. so now we times 26 by 12. But it is still too hard! So I break it up... 20x12=240, and 6x12=72. Now add the 240 and the 72 together, and that is the area. (240+72=312m squared)

Term 2 - Moment in Time writing

Creatures from the deep
The perfect day. Or so I thought it was.
I was lying on the beach relaxing, after a very stressful week. I decided to have a swim, so I got up and walked toward the water. I smelt the beautiful scent of the ocean water as the moist sand squelched beneath my feet, I laughed out loud as the warm water wove its way around my ankles. This was the perfect way to escape from reality. I sighed as I sat down in the shallow water and tied my long silky hair up into a bun so it wouldn’t get wet.
I gasped suddenly as I thought I saw two large green eyes staring at me from the deep waters below. It must have been mind tricks my brain is playing on me from all the stress I’ve been having, I assured myself. I’ll drink a glass of water, I was thirsty anyway. I sipped a little from the bottle of water I brought with me. Much better.
I gasped for a second time as I saw the pair of light green eyes blinking up at me. The pupils were slits like a cats. “Weird,” I whispered out loud as I walked deeper into the water to get a closer look. It was a giant octopus. I gasped loudly and clapped my hand to my mouth. I turned to run away, but the slimy tentacle, slid up from the depths below, and grabbed me tightly around my waist. I tried to scream but I was quickly pulled into the deep waters of the ocean.
I attempted to shout, but all that came out of my mouth was bubbles and a tiny whining noise. I needed to let somebody know I was drowning, that I was being taken  victim of a giant octopus. But it was no use. All I could do to let somebody know I was there was to reach my hand up to the surface. But the tentacle tugged hard, and I was pulled back. I was always good at holding my breath in the swimming lessons we had when I was a kid, but I wasn’t ready, and I was losing my breath fast. I saw the surface slowly fading away, as we entered his underwater lair.
My ears popped, and I jerked. The tentacle released me when I did. This was my chance, I’m a great swimmer. I swam to the surface. Or at least tried to. I was halfway up to the surface when the octopus noticed me struggling to swim to the top. There was no way I was as fast as that octopus.
It swiftly glided up to me easily. The tentacle that held me hostage glided up from it’s home of the seven other giant slimy tentacles. it grabbed me gently around the waist. NO! That was my chance, and I failed. I started crying, but even if someone was there they wouldn’t tell. I were underwater of course. My vision blurred as my throat screamed for air. I was going to die, I knew it I thought as I blacked out.
I was lying on nothing. But gravity let me float. It took a while to realize I wasn’t dead. Because if I was thinking, I must be alive. I opened my eyes but felt like I hadn’t because I was floating in blackness. Was I floating in space? No. it can’t be. It must be a dream, but it feels so real. I swam around a bit, to see if there was ant escape from this black void.
My hair tie that tied my bun up, came undone and my brown hair floated around me.The hair tie floated down onto the bottom of the blackness. So I swam down to get it. Suddenly the octopus looked up at me from it’s hiding place, I swam away, but it caught up to me. It was right at my feet, when I saw a boat, floating at the surface of the water. That is where I need to go, I thought to myself.
I swam as fast as I could, I felt like I could beat all of the Olympic swimmers. I got to the surface and swam like lightning towards the shore. My knees hit the sand, and I crawled onto land, flopped on the sand and puffed. I gasped for air, and clutched my throat as I breathed in and out.
The octopus was deadly mad that I had gotten away, and his tentacles thrashed around the surface of the water, making small tsunamis. I heard people screaming in fear, and running off of the normally peaceful beach.
The lifeguards yelled and talked quickly into their walkie talkies. Soon, a helicopter flew overhead bringing a strong wind that made the trees sway.
One of the tentacles thrashed from underneath the surface of the water grabbed me around the waist once again, but i was ready this time. I breathed in and held my breath as I was thrust underwater for the second time. I thrashed in the water and tried to free myself from the octopus’ wrath.
I managed to squeeze out of the tight and slimy tentacle, and I swam towards the surface of the green water, I struggled as my feet were going numb, as I was about to  pass out from exhaustion.
I saw through my squinted eyes that the helicopter was lowering something that looked like a rope. That was my way out. My hand reached the surface again, and with the last bit of strength I had left in my weak body, I kicked the water, and launched myself towards the rope. I held onto it as if I was holding onto my life. I laughed out loud, looking down at the octopus, which was screaming and making terrible noises, as I got hauled away by the shiny helicopter into the horizon.

The Problem with Plastic

WALT use reference books/tools. WALT  use appropriate skills and technologies to find and use a range of texts for specific purposes   (assessment task)

Possible resources:

You may be able to find others to help you complete your research.

You can present your learning on a google doc (this one) or a presentation. PLEASE link your presentation onto this document.

What do you need to research?
The big question: WHAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH PLASTIC?

You should find information about these questions?
  1. What is plastic?
Plastics are made out of petrochemicals. Most plastics can be moulded and last just about forever.
  1. Why is it a problem for the environment?
Even though the plastics get broken down, thier not gone. In this broken down state, it just makes it easier to get into soil, lakes, and rivers. In other words, the environment. It also makes it easier to get into sea creature’s digestive systems.
  1. What facts can you find about the amount of plastic we use, how it is made, how it breaks down?
  • The average time for a plastic bottle to be broken down is at least 450 years.
  • Some plastic bottles take 1000 years to break down!
  • Enough plastic is throw away each year to circle the world four times.
  • The average American throws away 84 kilograms of plastic each!
  • The materials used in the production of plastics are natural products, but when they get thrown back into the environment they are much worse.
  • Plastics are made out of crude oil.

  1. Create a glossary of at least 5 technical words used in your research.
5 words that plastic is made of.

  • Perspex- a strong transparent plastic that can be used instead of glass in doors, windows, etc…
  • Formica- a hard plastic used for covering surfaces.
  • Teflon- used to prevent food from sticking to pans.
  • Vinyl- a strong plastic used for making different things.
  • Polystyrene- a light substance used to prevent fragile things breaking in boxes.
  1. Create a bibliography of resources you have used to present your answers to this question.
